Things you should know
- Employment in UAE is quite a bit different than employment in other countries around the world. For starters, no minimum wage is enforced on employers in the UAE, thus salaries in Abu Dhabi, for example, could differ between two employees occupying the same position with the same job tasks and responsibilities.
- Salaries in UAE , and moreover, salaries in Abu Dhabi are earned on a monthly basis, no weekly, daily pays are usually applicable
- Work is mostly what life revolves around in Abu Dhabi especially for many professional expat workers with Abu Dhabi jobs. Most of the companies in Abu Dhabi offer a straight shift working schedule (jobs in Abu Dhabi are usually 9 to 10 hours, 5 days a week, with an hour lunch break except for the services sectors which operate 6 days a week), while some companies still operate on a 2 shifts basis (with 2 to 3 hours break in between).
- Expats constitute the highest proportion of the workforce in the UAE in general, the thing that motivated the government to implement the “Emiratisation” concept. “Emiratisation” is defined by Wiki, as a movement by the government of the UAE to proactively employ its citizens in the public and private sector to reduce its dependence on foreign workers (www.gov.ae states that only 11.5% of women graduates opt to work for the private sector since working for the government offers better salaries, benefits and working hours).
- Self Employment: Finding a sponsor is the main obstacle, should one decide to launch one’s own business in the UAE. It is always advisable to actually be in Abu Dhabi and meet with your local acquaintances (or your friends’ referrals) in order to secure your sponsorship (usually, an individual or a local company can sponsor you, and your sponsor does not necessarily have to participate financially in your business at all). The fees are usually paid either from the annual revenues or via monthly installments. Bear in mind you should keep everything legal and assign a lawyer to guide you through the steps of the process. Also make sure you are very knowledgeable about the UAE market before you involve yourself with starting a business in the UAE.
How can one find jobs in the UAE?
- Direct Company Career Sites: Company career sites are free of charge with no middle man required but positions might not be kept up-to-date at all times and choices are limited to positions in that specific company.
- Career Fairs: Plenty of Abu Dhabi career fairs take place, especially as part of Abu Dhabi university events. These provide job seekers with good exposure (to many of Abu Dhabi’s top employers and companies) but would require physical presence and might, thus, become time consuming and costly.
- Referrals or Word of Mouth: Making use of your social networks remains of course one of methods that are widely used to find jobs in the UAE, jobs in Abu Dhabi and jobs in Dubai. Of course, this method is free of charge but not completely reliable at all times
- Newspapers: Most UAE local newspapers (such as Gulf News and Khaleej times) have daily appointment sections that are classified according to region and industry: jobs in Dubai, jobs in Abu Dhabi, jobs in UAE, banking jobs in UAE, marketing jobs in UAE, engineering jobs in UAE, finance jobs in UAE, management jobs in UAE etc…
