As Abu Dhabi continues to grow, experts believe that the non-oil sector will push the GDP to Dh263 billion by 2010.
With per capita income rising to the highest levels in the world, from Dhs193,000 in 2006 to Dhs200,000 in 2007, the private sector has contributed greatly to the GDP rising and it is expected to rise 20 per cent in the coming years.
d. Orientation The city of Abu Dhabi is located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on an island located a short distance from the UAE mainland. Bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia, the UAE is comprised of emirates, or states, with Abu Dhabi surrounded by Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Dubai, Umm al-Quwain, Fujairah, and Ajman.
Those who live or work in Abu Dhabi should know the story. The UAE was created in 1971, formed when Britain, its former protector, left the Persian Gulf. Tracing its history all the way back to the 3rd millennium BC, Abu Dhabi found temporary wealth in the cultured pearl industry and later on sustaining itself with camel herding, and fruit and vegetable production.
Discovering huge oil reserves in the late 1950’s, and then gaining independence after 1971, Abdu Dhabi as never looked back. Now the second largest city in the UAE, Abu Dhabi shares its political, economic and military power with the other emirates keeping local government under its own jurisdiction.
Mainly comprised of hot, dry desert, the Abu Dhabi Emirate is only about 30% inhabited. Abu Dhabi’s land area covers 67,340 square kilometres of the UAE equalling about 80% of the country’s total mass. Taking great care to establish ‘green areas’, Abu Dhabi is concerned with agriculture, irrigation and conservation designating wildlife sanctuaries on many of its small, uninhabited islands.
