Even though Qatar has had good trade relations with the West since the 19th century, it is still advisable to abide by the cultural practices of the locals in business and socially. It is important for anyone who holds a job in the Qatar to remember a few key things:
- The Arabic greeting 'Salaam Aleikum' is much appreciated and in order to leave a good impression, politeness is a must!
- Shaking hands is customary between men. It is appropriate that both men and women dress in suits. Women should make sure their attire is rather on the conservative side.
- The act of giving gifts is usually appreciated and often reciprocated, but not really a must-do.
- Both languages Arabic and English should be printed on business cards.
- Maintaining professional eye contact counts as a sign of interest and respect.
