The AOU aims to establish itself as a leading institution of open learning offering opportunities for a new method of study and creating a forum of lifelong learning. The university intends to promote human resources development that is compatible with the demands and challenges of current and emerging information technology platforms and international socio-economic developments. The AOU relies on an open system of education the main paradigm of which lies in its flexibility to accommodate a wide base of Higher Education seekers thereby offering educational opportunities to all qualified applicants in accordance with student need and ability. Of the two modes of open education, mainly that which does not require attendance and that which requires attendance, the open system of learning at AOU represents the latter. As such, it is distinctly different from study by correspondence. Unlike distance education, which does not involve face to face interaction between students and instructors, the AOU open learning platform involves a tutoring process that aims, in turn, at promoting a proactive environment for learning. To accommodate working students and those commuting from remote areas, tutorials are scheduled according to their convenience
