The Qatar Professional Football League Development Committee was created in December 2006 within the QFA to raise the standards and professionalise football for the top clubs in Qatar. This body was formed as a permanent committee within the QFA to lead the development of professional football in Qatar. This body was renamed the QATAR STARS LEAGUE in 2008. The ambition was to develop professional football within Qatar to a higher level while fulfilling the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) requirements as a professional league. The QSL takes the responsibility of marketing and developing football within Qatar. (QSL) is responsible for managing all commercial, broadcast, marketing, ticketing and administration matters relating to the QSL and its 12 member clubs. Along with the League, the QSL runs the Heir Apparent Cup and the Qatar Stars Cup competitions. The 12 QSL clubs are, in order of where they finished last season; Lekhwiya, El Jaish, Al Rayyan, Al Sadd (reigning AFC Champions League Champions), Al Khor, Al Gharafa, Al Wakrah, Al Kharaitiyat, Al Arabi, Qatar SC, Umm Salal, Al Sailiya (promoted last season).
