This position reports directly to the Director of Finance. The position requires experience with reconciliations, management reporting, accounting methods, and analysis. The candidate must be able to exhibit professional judgment in dealing with accounting related issues. The candidate must have strong problem solving and analysis skills in order to interpret, manipulate and report financial information.

The candidate must be able to evaluate and analyze financial information and provide guidance to other financial services employees. This position requires a high level of accuracy and understanding of University financial systems, policies and accounting procedures. This is a regular full-time position.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The candidate will be required to review AR, AP, payroll and general journal batch entries for accuracy and compliance. They will also complete a monthly review of all account reconciliations prepared by other financial services employees. The incumbent will aid in the preparation of monthly management reporting, as well as other ad hoc reporting as assigned. This position will aid faculty and staff with the PeopleSoft Expense Module through developing training materials and providing one-on-one assistance. The incumbent will take on other duties as assigned to aid the department during peak times.

The position requires that the individual be involved in problem solving and be able to make independent decisions based on a logical analysis of the facts presented.

Tasks and Duties:

- Coordinates workflow and sets priorities and deadlines
-Timely and accurate financial reporting
- Required to make decisions and work independently
- Work with unit managers in order to consult on financial issues
- Administer and manage the submission of all financial transactions (purchase orders, payroll, expense claims, accounts receivable, recoveries and journal entries)
-Ensures proper accounting treatment for all transactions within GAAP
- Provides financial reports to the Director, Finance
- Required to work on key financial projects as required
- Interprets University policies and is able to apply them in given circumstances
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of University culture and operating procedures
- Ability to deal effectively with complex issues, using judgment and initiating resolutions
- Demonstrates highly developed organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
- Builds positive relationships with faculty and staff and acts as liaison with other units on campus to complete tasks
- Handles confidential information in a professional manner and with integrity
- Contributes to a positive, team-based environment.
- Must have exceptional interpersonal, communication, leadership, negotiation, and client services skills

Preference will be given to candidates with post secondary education in the field of accounting. A comprehensive knowledge of the University of Calgary financial systems would be an asset. Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Enterprise Data Warehouse and Cognos Reporting is considered an asset. Experience working with Excel in a financial setting is required. A combination of basic accounting courses and experience working in a financial environment is necessary. An understanding of GAAP is required. Budget management is considered an asset. Experience working in a team oriented environment is needed.
