JOB SUMMARY


The Risk Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization's enterprise risk management (ERM) program. The post holder focuses on identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks across various areas to safeguard the organization's assets and ensure its long-term sustainability. 


The Risk manager plays a critical role in aligning the organization's risk management, insurance, and indemnification strategies to protect against potential financial losses and liabilities while actively working to minimize risks through proactive measures. The incumbents work contributes to the organization's overall resilience and financial security.


KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES


Enterprise Risk Management


  • Develops and implements the organization's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework, policies, and procedures.
  • Identifies and assesses risks across various domains, including financial, operational, strategic, compliance, and reputational risks.
  • Collaborates with branches, divisions, department heads and business units to identify specific risks within their areas and develops comprehensive mitigation plans.
  • Monitors and reports on the organization's risk profile, ensuring transparency and awareness at all levels.
  • Maintains and updates the risk register, documenting identified risks, their likelihood, impact, and mitigation strategies.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing risk management processes and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Conducts risk assessments and scenario analyses to identify emerging risks and vulnerabilities.
  • Prepares and delivers risk reports for executive leadership, standing committees and the Board of Governors.
  • Acts as the secretary to the Enterprise Risk Management Committee 
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of an integrated Risk Management System to be used by all the Departments and Divisions.
  • Supports the Director of Governance, Risk, Ethics and Compliance to ensure that risk as an agenda item is included in all relevant committees and group and ensures they are provided with reports as per their workplans.

Insurance Policy Management:


  • Reviews and analyzes existing insurance policies to understand coverage, terms, and limitations. 
  • Works with insurance broker to understand policy terms, conditions, and coverage. 
  • Makes recommendations for policy adjustments or additional coverage based on risk assessments.
  • Works collaboratively with procurement, legal and finance teams, ensures indemnification clauses with vendors and partners align with the organization's risk management strategy and insurance policies.
  • Works with finance departments to estimate the financial impact of potential risks and the cost of insurance premiums.
  • In the event of an incident, initiates and manages the insurance claims process. 
  • Ensures all required documentation is provided to the insurer, and follow up on the status of claims.
  • Coordinates with legal and finance teams to process claims efficiently.

Teamwork and collaboration


  • Coordinates with internal audit and legal departments to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach to risk management.
  • Works collaboratively with the Governance Manager and Compliance and Ethics Manager to ensure that all risks identified are addressed
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with regulatory agencies, external partners, and industry peers to stay updated on best practices and industry trends.
  • Fosters effective communication channels with staff to encourage risk identification and assessment
  • Plays a key role in the co-ordination and delivery of risk management across all departments and units.

Leadership / People Management


  • Provides support and advice in risk identification, assessment and mitigation plans to manage the risks.
  • Develops a transformational and facilitative leadership style across the organization encouraging, empowerment of individuals within teams, encouraging leadership at all levels of services in embedding risk management throughout the organization.

Performance and project management including continuous improvement


  • Utilizes high level organizational skills to manage projects.
  • Supports the Director of Governance, Risk, Ethics and Compliance in the collation and monitoring of all Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) 
  • Establishes and manages any committees/ group related to risk management including appropriate reporting to committees/ groups.
  • Promotes a risk-aware culture through communication and training programs and other change management programs, in order to ensure risk awareness across all the Departments and Divisions,
  • Provides input and recommend the continuous improvement of practices relating to Risk Management, considering ‘international best practice’, changes in international standards and changes in the business or operational environment.

Education and training


  • Develops and delivers ERM education and training programs for staff at all levels, promoting a risk aware culture of accountability.
  • Stays informed about changes in laws, regulations, and industry standards related to risk management, keeping staff informed of these changes.
  • Designs, updates, and implements risk management education modules for new employee orientation and continuing education in collaboration with relevant departments such as human resources, learning and development, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE


Education


Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare, finance, risk management, or a related field


Experience


5+ years of experience with progressive responsibilities in risk management, in a hospital setting, inclusive of;


  • Experience in developing and implementing strategies, policies, guidelines and projects.
  • Practical experience in working with senior leaders and clinicians 
  • Experience of successfully operating in a politically sensitive environment
  • Experience of drafting briefing papers, taking minutes and preparing correspondence at senior level
