Reason being the people shortlisting your profile via various job portals and media (head hunters) prefer short listing candidates who have prior work experience in a particular industry. Which is the easiest way to fit a candidate to the job requirement. Secondly, companies too prefer candidates from the same background and knowledge of work, this saves them time and training expenses. In today's competitive environment most companies look for people its better to chose from the same industry.
So you can always change industry if your nature of work is similar, if not in that case your prior work xp will lose significance. if you are lucky and get the opportunity it opens a new window for you and adds to your knowledge the know how and experience in varied fields which is very much required for Top Level managerial positions.
It is and is not at the same time. In today's scenario though you might be having the right skills, people shortlisting your profile may not think so basing on your prior experience. There are very few people or organization who are open to take chances with people from different profile or industry.
