As I know, we can easily step up and step down ac voltage and also ac voltage is useful in long transmission of electricity but now why every country is switching to DC Transmission, as DC Voltage is very harmful for everybeings, India, America is switching why????
Both the transmission systems viz. AC & DC has their advantages and disadvantages. But due to following facts DC transmission is preferable-
1. Line loss are less. Due to absence of inductive & capacitive reactance only loss occurs due to resistance in the line.
2. Less conductor is required i.e. only to equivalent size of conductor is required in place of 3-4 conductor or more in the case of AC.
3. Less magnetic loss.
4. No or very less effect on communication line near it due to absence of frequency.
The disadvantage of DC line is that the DC voltage can not be step or down but comparatively DC transmission is more advantageous than AC transmission.
The main reason seems to be the power losses or you can say transmission losses. If we are using ac then capacitive reactances as well as inductive reactances come into play due to frequency of ac >0 and hence losses will be increased where as for dc almost only resistance come into play...

As the transmission voltage increase so is the losses like Capacitive and inductive.That certainly affects the voltage regulation between sending end and receiving end. So beyond certain Voltage levels, say 750KV, DC transmission is more beneficial than AC transmission.
