A good manager leads his team. He/she is not a boss but a leader. When you were busy on the work floor you're there to support your staff. Sometime just to give advice and sometime you have to take over when needed. You're able to deal with customers and their complaints. You have to trust your staff and you prove them your respect , your knowledges and your morals, but don't let them run over you. You don't get stressed easily and you have a positive attitude. You love your job and you have knowledges of the management criteria and it's values .You listen to criticism, if you get some.

A good test manager has a number of key attributes. I tend to think that the best managers are like good, professional sports coaches.

  • They have played "the game", at the highest levels, they know what is required to be successful and achieve the results you are after. Translated, they should be a great tester themselves and be able to test hands on if required.

  • They should inspire others to greatness. A good manager should be able to motivate and inspire the team to function as a team, as opposed to a group of champions.

  • They should provide the best equipment. A good manager will ensure that the team has the tools that it needs to do the job, and do whatever is required to buy, build, beg, borrow or steal them. (Stealing not recommended).

  • They need to protect the team from outside influences. A good manager will act as a proxy for the team, and be their voice or fight the fight on their behalf, to clear any obstacles, allowing them to just get the job done.

So I would ask the question, "If you had to say you were a sports coach, or a military leader or politician, which would you pick and why?"

I agree with the experts answers. Thank you.

He needs to have up to date test skills and tools, also need to deploy a well contract/agreement to state the scope of the testing and any kind of liability concerns of the testing which could affect the company activities and risks.

The most important skills for a test manager to have :

-be familiar with the software development process  - be able to maintain enthusiasm of their team and promote a positive atmosphere, despite what is a somewhat 'negative' process

- be able to promote teamwork to increase productivity  - be able to promote cooperation between software, test, and QA engineers  - have the diplomatic skills needed to promote improvements in QA processes  -have the ability to withstand pressures and say 'no' to other managers when quality is insufficient or QA processes are not being adhered to  - have people judgment skills for hiring and keeping skilled personnel - be able to communicate with technical and non-technical people, engineers, managers, and customers.  - be able to run meetings and keep them focused

Good managerial skills

Sound business and functional knowledge of the system or functionality of getting tested.

Good communication, interaction and rapport with different teams/phases of the project teams.

Sound knowledge of testing procedures and resource maintenance and allocation of work, etc.

Great investigation skills also required to investigate the issue whether it is a real bug or because of the bad test case.

My2 cents.

Every organization in general, has two major elements: a) Equipment, b) Staff

A test manager ought to have the skill to exercise the staff in order to improve productivity or to prevent future fails, in a manner that will not effect relationships and hierarchy.

On the other hand, regarding the equipment, he/she has to be able to get to know easily and fast all the operations and functioning of the equipment (assets, machines, vehicles etc.) in order to be in place for testing the maximum productivity by combining every single "tool"

Last but not least a test manager has to develop and maintain a high end and quality relationships within his/her organization with every stakeholder, in order to be able to receive the maximum of cooperation during tests and/or during delivering the results of the tests.
