Generally for a mass concrete works such as dam works, Low Heat Cement or Blast Furnace Slag Cement can be used. The main factor of is to reduce Heat of Hydration generated which would be difficult to contain and will result in weaker concrete strength.

Low heat of hydration (type IV) cement  is used for huge structures such as dams.

In massive concrete structures, heat of hydration plays important part. High heat of hydration will create cracks in the structure, hence we can use either;1- Low heat cement2- Cement blended with fly ash/slag3- Cement with low C3A content preferably mixed with fly ash/slag
