I think the question should be,
"Why is the Apple iPhone better than phones which use Android technology?"
Considering there are no other phones that use iOS, but there are many phones which use Android software.
iPhone is better in that it's operating system limited to a single device, where as Android is open source and has been spread across many devices.
The physical structure of an apple phone is better AND it retains its value for longer periods. Someone that wants to sell their current iPhone 6 will be able to get more money from it, despite being a year old, than someone who wants to sell their Samsung device that is a year old.
You can make the argument that Apple is better because it continues to retain a good value if it's in good condition, I.E the market is still nice despite being a year old.

On another note, in terms of being able to "customize" and make the actual software inside versatile, to suit your needs. Android is better than the iOS software which is the exact same across all devices. So in this case, Android is better than iPhone.
It all depends on what you mean by "better"

For selling?
For customizing?
For security?

In single word i can explain why iPhone is better than Android is Security. Anyhow everyone falling on iPhone whether they like it or not but everyone has the insurance that their data in cloud will always be confidential.
