Mainframe is very high speed computer just after super computer. Mainframe is used for market analysis, weather census and banking. This is very expensive and no used for individual purpose. Hence used by organisation.
Initially mainframe is just about taking high volume of input-output data and later break this information into small sub problem and process it. But due to virtualization, this system can be virtualized in many different physical like computer to utilize the power of computer.
Visually, mainframe is not look like our desktop computer but it has same principle. Instead, it has case look like wardrobe with lots of power and network cable. Mainframe is generally placed in data center. Data center provides atmospheric condition, power management and there is lots of technician which take care other fault like storage or network issue.
So basically mainframe uses operating system like PC. Initially they have to lineage of operating system DOS and OS but later OS/2 replaced with Linux. Since mainframe s in data center we have to work remotely via network. For this, HMC(harware management console which is basically OS/2) access via network over SSL and HTTP connection.
One of the important feature of mainframe is JCL Scripting language and programming langual COBOL. JCL(Job Card Library) which vary system to system where program unit(Bussiness Logic/Code) which is written COBOL become architecture independent. Can be taken anywhere later upload with another JCL.
The fact is IBM is leader in Mainframe manufacturing. It has capability of hosting computer but efficient utilization is achieved by hosting application like databases and web application.
