If both end WAN devises are Cisco then you can use HDLC, else use PPP.
It depends on the network connection you can use or you want to use.. but mostly PPP used .

Please do not freak out because ATM is an answer to this question. PPP is mostly used for dial-up (async) services, but ATM could be used as well, though it typically is not used anymore since PPP is so efficient.
PPP is the most correct answer. Also ATM can be used. But, It's less use since PPP is so efficient.
