Headlines are important to catch the attention of short attention-span internet readers. What makes a title attractive to click on, in general?

It should be short and attractive to make you want to read more :)

In short would like to say :

Tell a man that there are3 billions stars in the universe, he will beilive you AND 

If you tell that man, that, the bench has wet paint on it, he will touch it to make sure.

It should be simple in wording but weird in content; e.g.,  Man bites dog 

or "Fox guarding the chicken coop"!

In addition to being short and attractive, the title should make readers curious. In a sense, it should be about something that is not ordinary yet that is not too strange to make readers alienated (it is credible). In addition, a title is mostly attractive when it appeals to the emotions, intellect, concerns, etc. of readers. Hence, writing good titles involves a kind of an audience analysis (age, gender, clicking preferences etc.) so that you start to know what attracts your particular readers.

Simple but mysterious; to make the reader want to know more.

Single Tricky Word, could be good way to attrect but need a lot of care before placing as heading.. 

It creates the first impression in the minds of the audience and gives an insight about the content of the post
