How do you keep up with technology trends?

In terms of keeping up with new developments, bear one thing in your mind; don’t overboard yourself. Simon Pont, author of Digital State, says "We’re moving away from an era where you need to be the best in your field in the world. It’s now better to be adaptable. Look constantly at new areas and build organically." So my advice is to start with determining your needs. Once you know your needs, assess the resources available to you. It can be websites, groups, LinkedIn pages, social networking etc. Rank the resources in order of usefulness to you. Then lastly, allocate the time to use those resources.

By reading industry related media and participating in the subject work groups. I suggest to concentrate on the technologies inline with your company's approved strategies.

I'm not the type of person who want to be first to acquire what technology innovation has to offer.  But I am always eager to read and follow through its progress, writing reviews and making comments about it so that consumers may be well-informed.

Just follow the below steps and you're set to go:

1) Ask questions to the right people. Remember you don't know it all, so even a junior person might teach you something.

2) Read.

3) Make google your best friend.

Research and Learning, keeping up-to-date with technological media as well as external factors effecting the technological industry. This is an industry that is so fast moving and constantly changing if you are not up-to-date through media and networking with other professionals it's very difficult to keep up.

1. Online (subscribing to related leading blogs & news outlets, Technorati & Mashable are personal favourites, LinkedIn is second)
2. TV programs. Biggest ground-breaking technologies always make sure (and can afford) to be featured on TV too (technology programs on BBC, CNN & famous channels.)
3. Print magazines (not very frequent)

Well, in my field as an architect, you have to keep up or you're gonna miss the train! I keep reading latest articles, join my industry community forums & groups. This way I'm sure to know -at least- what are the latest trends & techologies in architectural design. 

The more important step is to be eager to learn new ways & abandon the old ones. That is a gift I wish I never lose. Taking courses + self education is essential to know more & practice new technologies, not just be aware of their existance. 

As technology is becoming an unavoidable element of life today, keeping up with the latest tech trends became more vital than ever before.

Seminars, workshops, conferences, people networks (either formal or informal), internet (social media, mail list e.g. in my case, i am receiving around4-5 e-mails per day by just subscribing to the famous techrepublic.com) etc etc...would form a constructive helping hand with this matter.
