Position description


Technical Director – Water/ Wastewater


Primary functions
  • Lead and contribute to the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, contribute to the development of junior staff, preparation of proposals and contribution to the broader business. 
  • On projects, the Technical Director is assigned responsibilities for the overview and guidance of an opportunity or project to deliver successful outcomes for the client and GHD.
  • Provide technical inputs to projects.
  • Lead and/or review design of allocated projects under the direction of the project manager, coordinating inputs from various professionals.
  • Project manage allocated projects, coordinating inputs from various professionals. Manage resources at a project level. 
  • Develop technical content and undertake technical review of work by others where within area of experience and expertise
  • Provide deliverables to a high-quality standard in line with GHD quality system.
  • Contribute to the development of GHD’s knowledge and skills in industry including strategy, planning, design and construction.
  • Lead and assist in the securing and delivering water / wastewater projects, including preparation of proposals.
  • Assist in the promotion of GHD’s strategy, business ethics and values, internally and externally.

Key accountabilities
  • Completion of roles on various projects across strategy, planning and design.
  • Lead and coordinate multi-discipline teams to ensure high quality deliverables that are on time and on budget for the completion of projects.
  • Liaise with clients and subconsultants as necessary to ensure successful completion of projects. 
  • Preparation of proposals as required.
  • Develop technical and personal skills through participation in “on the job” and formal training and development opportunities in various phases of office and field work.
  • Minimum presence in the GHD Newcastle office to provide guidance to junior staff. Refer to KPI section.
  • Provide technical guidance of junior staff as required.

Key Performance Indicators (KPI)
  • Take full responsibility of project deliverables, ensuring quality and delivery of project on time and to budget.
  • Client satisfaction and development of client base (internal and external).
  • Contribution to knowledge sharing and development of skills within the group and Service Line.
  • Hybrid work arrangement with a minimum of 3 days per week in the GHD Newcastle office.
  • Personal achievement of KPIs as agreed (including staff utilisation, invoicing targets and others).
  • Teamwork, cooperation, open communication.

Personal competencies
  • Well-developed communication skills - both verbal and written.
  • Team player, cooperative with other staff with open sharing of information and knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently when required.
  • Sound judgement and decisiveness.
  • Knowledge and experience in relevant engineering discipline.

Experience and skills
  • Formal qualifications in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Proven experience in project managing the delivery of projects.
  • Focus on client service.
  • Able to manage several jobs at once and determine priorities.
  • Strong judgement and decisiveness; bias for action.
  • Understand and adhere to GHD’s values, Codes of Conduct, and Policies.
  • Proactive, analytical and problem solving skills.
