Dating back 150 years, the original city of Dubai started out as a modest port town known for pearl-diving and for its close proximity to India as a trade route. Created in 1971, the United Arab Emirates was formed when Britain, its former protector, left the Persian Gulf. Reaping riches from its oil interests, Dubai began to grow exponentially taking in immigrants fleeing wars and seeking employment. Now the largest city in the UAE, Dubai shares its political, economic and military power with the other emirates keeping local government under its own jurisdiction.
