People
The population of Qatar was estimated to be around 1, 450,000 people by end of 2008. Qatar’s population is split with 25% native Qatari while 75% of the population are expat residents who work in Qatar. The majority of expats coming to work in Qatar are from South Asia, the Philippines and other Arab countries. As for the gender breakdown, men represent 66.7% of the total population while women represent only 33.3%. This difference is due to the fact that most of the expat workers who enter the country are usually men.
Languages
The official language is Arabic, although English is the common working language. Some other languages used are Hindi, Malayalam, Persian, Urdu, Tagalog.
Religion
Islam is the official religion in Qatar. Other religions present include Hindu, Christian, and others.
Liquor Laws
Being an Islamic State, the government of Qatar prohibits drinking alcohol in public except for licensed hotel restaurants and bars. Importing alcohol is also prohibited.
