NEWS PAPER IN-BRIEF: Al-Ayyam is the newest of the three daily Palestinian newspapers. The first issue was published on December 25,1995. In six months the newspaper became the second most read paper and is currently closing in on the number one paper, which has been in business for more than thirty years. For the past two years, the newspaper had seen its readership increase every month, and growth has not nearly reached its saturation point Sales of Al-Ayyam have been going up at rates of 7-10% per month for the first six months of 2001. Al-Ayyam is targeting to be the most distributed Palestinian newspaper by the end of 2002. This goal will be achieved by introducing a modern, reliable and competitive paper, which will include articles, supplements on important subjects concerning the Palestinian community. Al-Ayyam’s distribution is mainly in the West Bank, Gaza and partly abroad where its readership reaches approximately 250 thousand. Last year Al-Ayyam began its official distribution in Israel starting with a successful pilot project for the market in “Al- Mothalath” area. As a result, and as noted by the Israeli Press, Al-Ayyam became the number one Arabic daily newspaper in that area during the six-month test period. In July 1996, Al-Ayyam became the first Palestinian news service organization to offer Internet service. This has increased Al-Ayyams exposure and provided it with worldwide access. Currently, it has a growing readership encompassing over 50 different countries as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, et. Also, Al-Ayyam on the Internet is available to readers in all continents. Al-Ayyams articles has been quoted by international press agencies such as REUTERS, AFP, AP, CNN, MBC, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE FINANCIAL TIME, JAZEERA SATELLITE CHANNEL as well as Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli newspapers, radios and TVs.
