About International Committee of Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), established in 1863, works world wide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and a the same time promote respect to International Humanitarian Law. We are an independent and neutral organisation, and our mandate stems essential from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their international Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the intentional activities conducted in these situations. The ICRC has been in Kuwait since the 1990–91 Gulf War and operates in the GCC in KSA, UAE and Oman. It focuses on humanitarian needs remaining from that war or arising from current armed conflicts and other situations of violence in the wider region. Its work includes activities for people deprived of their freedom in the countries covered and the promotion of IHL and its own role as a neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian organization, among governments and other circles. Strengthening partnerships with the Red Crescent Societies of the region is another priority, along with resource mobilization and coordination with other actors. The ICRC’s Kuwait City delegation promotes the incorporation of international humanitarian law into national legislation and conducts military training in countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. It also protects detainees and handles humanitarian matters arising from the 1990-1991 Gulf War.
