About Union Water And Electricity Company

The Union Water & Electricity Company (UWEC) was set up by the Abu Dhabi government under instructions from President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to meet the rising demand for water in Al Ain and the growing power needs of the northern emirates. The company came into existence through an Emiri Decree issued on 26 June 2001 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Fujairah. On 11 September 2001, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, issued Resolution No. 2 of 2001 to establish the company's five-member Board of Directors and authorized its paid-up capital of AED 1.5 billion. The board is headed by His Highness Sheikh Hamid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Economic Department.
