Three in 10 Jordan working respondents expect their employers to be definitely hiring in the next three months according to Bayt.com and YouGov survey

The latest Middle East Job Index Survey, conducted by the Middle East’s leading job site, Bayt.com, and research and consulting firm, YouGov, has revealed that55% of the working respondents in Jordan expect their employers to be hiring in the next three months; three in10 saying they will be definitely hiring. The majority of respondents in Jordan said that, in the next three months, they will be mostly hiring marketing managers (13%), receptionists (13%) and financial analysts (13%).

Hiring expectations in Jordan

According to working respondents in Jordan,30% are ‘definitely hiring’ and25% are ‘probably hiring’ in the next three months, while just7% say that they are ‘definitely not hiring’ in the same time period. Focusing on future expectations,71% of working respondents in Jordan state that their companies will be hiring in a years’ time, with32% ‘definitely hiring’ and39% ‘probably hiring’. On the other hand,2% are ‘definitely not hiring’ and21% ‘don’t know/can’t tell’ their intentions for recruitment in the coming year.

Among those hiring in the next three months in Jordan,60% will open positions to fill a maximum of five job roles, while a quarter will be hiring for6-10 jobs. Six in10 respondents will be looking to hire ‘mid-career candidates with no managerial responsibilities’; five in10 will be looking for ‘entry-level candidates with no managerial responsibilities’; while three in10 will be searching for ‘team leaders/supervisors’.

More than half of the working respondents in Jordan (54%) claim that, over the last three months, their company has hired new employees;16% say that they had new hires in the last12 months.

Roles and experience employers are looking for

Three in10 Jordan companies are looking for candidates with mid-level experience (3 to7 years), while26% look for managerial experience.27% are looking for candidates with experience in sales and marketing, and another27% are looking to hire candidates with computer skills.

Desired skills and qualifications

Good communication skills in English and Arabic is the most desired skill by companies in Jordan, at76%. Efficiency and productivity, overall personality and demeanor, and working well in teams are also highly valued skills for57%,54% and53% of Jordan’s working respondents, respectively. Being trustworthy and honest follows at49%.

As for the most sought-after educational qualifications, administrative qualifications (28%), graduate/postgraduate degree in Business Management (26%) and computer science qualifications (16%) emerge as the most desired academic qualifications when looking for candidates in Jordan.

Industries attracting top talent in Jordan

Respondents living in Jordan claim that ‘banking/finance’ (42%), ‘construction’ (36%), ‘telecommunication’ (31%), ‘tourism/hospitality’ (30%) and ‘IT’ (28%) are the industries that attract and retain the best talents in the country.

Moreover, more than a quarter of working respondents (26%) believe that their industry is equally attractive as a potential employer when compared to other industries;22% consider it to be slightly more attractive. On a national level, three in10 respondents consider Jordan as a slightly less attractive job market when compared to other countries in the MENA region.

“It is interesting to see the most popular job roles in the Jordan have changed since our last survey in July, indicating the fluidity of the Jordan market when it comes to employment options,” said Elissavet Vraka, Research Manager, YouGov.

Of the Jordan respondents working in the private sector,15% of them said they work in a small or medium-sized local company, and14% in a multinational company.22% of respondents are currently not working.

25% of working respondents claimed to be ‘junior managers/team leaders’,19% ‘directors or senior managers’ and14% of the respondents said they were ‘executives with no managerial responsibilities’. Of the Jordan respondents surveyed,8% work in the industrial manufacturing industry.

Data for the Bayt.com Middle East Job Index Survey was collected online between December8,2015 and January21,2016, with a total of1,232 online interviews conducted with respondents from the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Pakistan.
