How to react if, during the live program broadcast your share falls down?

When broadcasting a live program, very often one finds a competition on another channel at the same time. What do you do to improve your ratings while you direct live programs?

The answer to this question depends very much on why the share is falling.

If my assumption that the content is the problem (if the program goes live), then the share is in the hands of a capable creative producer and the director. That is, the content has to be upgraded on the go so that the viewers recognize the raise in quality and return to the channel. The ways to upgrade content depend very much on the country where the program is broadcasted and the viewers' habits.

For example, in the quiz programs, or singing competitions (such as X Factor etc.) a director/producer could hold the judges' decision so that the final vote is casted after the adverts. This way the viewers will stay to see the show's epilogue after the commercial break.
