Regard for my co-workers and for the needs of employees or clients motivates me to do a good job. If I were to do less than the best I'm capable of, more often than not, someone down the line would pay for it. Of course, this is not always the case, and where there appear to be no consequences to anyone else, pride motivates me to do a good job.

This question is asked to find out whether you are a person who thinks about a long term goals rather than on a short-term basis. And they want to hire a highly motivated people, not people who are just going through the motions until it's time to go home. So the answers would be purely in your prospective employer's interests.

Your best answer will emphasize the quality of the position and its tasks & responsibilities, along with the quality of the organization have always been your best motivators.

1) Challenges.  Challenges of the work that you will undertake if you are being hired. You can say you like to be challenged on the job and desire the opportunity to utilize your skills and talents.

2) Result Driven Attitude. You can say you are a highly result driven employee. Doing a good job and achieving the desired end result is your primary motivation.

3) Compliments, Recognition & Rewards.  As much as you like challenges, you also appreciate compliments and recognition from your Direct manager and the management.  This will bring motivation for you to work harder and perhaps to be rewarded with the good job.

4) Money is, of course, the major factor, but you may not want to emphasize this unless you are being interviewed for sales or a highly commissioned based role, or else steer clear from mentioning money as motivating factor.
