To be an ESL teacher it is not necessary to be a native speaker of English, however, it is preferred. I would suggest you take the IELTS or TOEFL exam to prove your proficiency in the language. When I studied for my CELTA certification, there were several people in my class who went on to be successful ESL teachers. Good luck!
