What is the best drawing tool for a beginner to start freehand drawing?

A pencil and a fine imagination

slate board and slate pencil ( no idea if that is available in modern world )

2B pencil and clear your mind what you want to draw.
It will be best if you start drawing of small objects with define line with light and shade.

If you're talking about drawing by hand then I highly recommend a soft 'B' pencil and a sketchbook with cartridge or bond paper.
When it comes to using the computer, you can use a drawing tablet or a mouse with Adobe Illustrator's pencil or pen tools.

I believe it is the pencil.. and you could use coal for extreme contrast between black and white..
