You should design it wholly before you jump to your pc to execute it. Think of your pc as just a tool not a design partner.

I would like to give my answer in points, so that it will be easier to remember and it will help people to gain knowledge.

Before you design a logo, we must do a small research about the company and we should know what the company does.2.
We must know what is the requirement from clients.3.
After we have the requirements on the desk, we should start the thought process with a pencil or pen and with bunch of papers on our desk.4.
We should put a list of what all we can use to create the identity.5.
Shortlist the elements from the list, make sure it is relevant to what you are up to.6.
Before you open the software, START SCRIBBLING.
Scribbling is the key process in creating the logo.
Through scribbling, i am sure we will be able to crack couple of ideas for the logo.
By scribbling we can bring our thoughts roughly and jot it down later.
This process will help us a lot in creating identities.7.
Shortlist your rough sketches and then proceed forward in your PC.
I am sure we'll find it easy and we'll be able to create a logo faster after we do this process each and every time before we start to execute our ideas directly in the software.
