I think the qualifications needed for the GIS project manager are:

  1. A bachelor degree or beyond in GIS, computer science, geography or related discipline as mentioned in the first answer
  2. A minimum of 7 years of practical experience in the GIS industry
  3. deep understanding of the GIS technology and the related software(s) and applications
  4. A minimum of 2 years experience on lead/manager roll
  5. A certified Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) is a plus
  6. PMP certification is a plus
