We often don't realise just how quick a Project Manager's name goes around in the industry. It has to be founded on fact and not malicious gossip.
I would agree to the fact that reputation plays a vital part in hiring a project manager; the style of the project manager, the types of previous projects, and the scale of success are also factors that play part in the hiring.
Sometimes, reputation of a project manager contain some rumours, which may be exaggerated, and not necessarily correct, but a project manager cannot do anything about it, but can include references for previous projects to potential employers in order to confirm the characteristics rumoured.

First I would say that word "reputation" has to be more clarified. If it means reputation as a worker then it matters if reputation as a person it does not matter. The only thing has to be considerable that the ability of running the project and his previous record of maintaining the success of the projects that he worked on.

It would be reputation on deliverables and also a personal level (integrity and EQ). One can have a project manager that is good at delivering, but may have lost resources (personnel) through poor people skills.
I agree. I think that this holds true for any profession and not only project managers.
