There are basic Rules to remember if you what to be a better Sales Person.... This I learned, practiced and teach my people..

Rule #1

Keep your mouth shut and your ears open.

This is crucial in the first few minutes of any sales interaction. Remember:1.Don't talk about yourself.2.Don't talk about your products.3.Don't talk about your services.4.And above all, don't recite your sales pitch!

Obviously, you want to introduce yourself. You want to tell your prospect your name and the purpose of your visit (or phone call), but what you don't want to do is ramble on about your product or service. After all, at this point, what could you possibly talk about? You have no idea if what you're offering is of any use to your prospect.

Rule #2

Sell with questions, not answers.Remember this: Nobody cares how great you are until they understand how great you think they are.

Forget about trying to "sell" your product or service and focus instead on why your prospect wants to buy. To do this, you need to get fascinated with your prospect; you need to ask questions (lots and lots of them) with no hidden agenda or ulterior motives.

Rule #3

Pretend you're on a first date with your prospect.Get curious about them. Ask about the products and services they're already using. Are they happy? Is what they're using now too expensive, not reliable enough, too slow? Find out what they really want. Remember, you're not conducting an impersonal survey here, so don't ask questions just for the sake of asking them. Instead, ask questions that will provide you with information about what your customers really need.

When you learn what your customers need and you stop trying to convince or persuade them to do something they may not want to do, you'll find them trusting you as a valued advisor and wanting to do more business with you as a result.

These are just a few rule one can apply to improve and become a better Sales person... I can go on and on.... but I might be discussing a whole program... I with these few rule it should point you already to a better start in becoming a better Sales Person. Happy selling and more success!

Know your product inside out and be confident in the product

In generally I agree with the comments above, but I miss a very important thing. To be an real good sales person you need of course a lot of knowledge and skills about communication, about the product, competitors and so on but the most important part is the knowledge about the needs of your potential buyer. The point is sales is to detect the needs, to present your product in the case that this product is exactly what the buyer needs. So, to become a better sales person you should more listen to the potential buyer and detect the needs to solve them. Everything else like confidence, dress, communication is of course important too but, to satisfied the needs is the most important thing built a long term relationship.

I good sales person should not believe in closing the sales call but his/her objective should be to open a relationship.

It is really about the long term relationship.

If a sales person is able to Understand the needs of customer and present to his/her needs it is said he is a skilled sales person.

But I say a good sales person is one who is able to sell whatever he needs to sell even to customers who may or may not need it at a given point of time.

Listening to the client. This is one trait we all know but hardly implement. Listen to the requirements

Offer a solution from which a prospect gets more advantage.

Upsell/Cross-sell. If a prospect is looking for X, give X+Y. That way you can benefit in your targets & ensure customer buys atleast one thing

Smile.

Be assertive & affirmative.

Always give options. Let the customer decide from the options you provide.

Be in touch even after the sales are completed. That way you get references & chances to sell again.

Build a professionally strong relationship so that the customer is happy. You build a base which helps even if you switch jobs

Always remember that the first impression is the last impression
