An air-cooled chiller has a condenser that is cooled by the environment air. The air-cooled chillers are preferred for small or medium installations but lately the quality improvement in their structure, allows the usage, in modular type, for large installations also. An air-cooled chiller is preferred especially in cases that there is not enough water or the water is very expensive. The water-cooled chillers have water cooled condenser connected with cooling tower and are usually preferred for medium and large installations where there is sufficiency of water

Air cooled chiller, heat is being rejected from the condensing unit by means of air circulation refrigerant being cooled by air.while for water cooled chilled refrigerant is being cooled by water as cooling agent

high temperature and high pressure gas condensing with air contact in air cooled and there condensing with water cooled

the main differance was condenser first cooled by air and  second cooled by water

Medium of coolingis the main difference between them

The source of thermal energy.

In air cooled chillers heat is rejected from condensing refrigerant to the air (via plate type heat exchanger) and in water cooled chillers the heat is rejected from condensing refrigerant to the water (via plate or shell & tube heat exchanger).

Air cooled chiller can be installed as a package and connected only to power supply and building chilled water system, while water cooled chilelr needs also to be connected to the cooling water sysem (cooling tower, drycooler, ground source water etc).

air cooled chillers count on the air to extract the heat from the compressed refrigerant, while the water cooled use water instead of air for the same purpose.

In case of Air cooled chiller  air is used as a medium to exchange the heat gained by the refrigerant .

Where as in case of Water cooled chiller water takes away the heat from the refrigerant.

Air cooled chiller is using ambient air for condensation process of refrigerant by fans means using surrounding air to extract heat that carried by compressed refrigerant to surrounding air and convert the high pressure gas to liquid phase ( saturated liquid ) may sometimes sub cooled liquid.

Water cooled chiller is chiller using water to cool for condensation process of condenser usually using cooling tower for that purpose .

the air cooled chillers have more cooling capacity than air cooled ones .

In air cooled system, air is using to cool the condenser, where as in water is using in water cooled system

Air cooled chiller means condenser is cooled by fresh air.

Water cooled chiller means condenser is cooled by cooling water coming from cooling tower.
