Does the lay out of the production machines affect the production efficiency?

Definitely the machine lay out play a mojor role in production efficiency. In a Production/Manufacturing shop floor, every section is the customer of the previous section or in other words the product of one machine is the raw material of the next machine.So The machine layout should be such that, the every machine should form a chain ie, from RAW MATERIAL to FINISHED PRODUCT.

I was discussing this point with a client just yesterday. The answer to the question is yes it does.

The shorter the distance the product travels through production, the less handling  and stoppage time there is and so the production method is more efficient.

If you can design your process for single piece flow through lines / cells then you reduce buffers and handling which can remove 90% of the processing time.

Draw your value stream maps to visualise the touch time, then start designing the process flow to eliminate the non value added times.
