Rather technical degree or administrative degree, he should have technical skills and well versed product knowledge. Sales manager should forecast the customer / client expectations.
It really depends on the organization they are working for and the product/service that they are expected to sell.
For example, if you are looking for a Sales Manager within technical or particularly specialized fields such as IT or Engineering then a technical degree in the applicable field would be more desirable.
Where as, if you are looking for a Sales Manager in real estate or hospitality, for example, then as long as they have industry experience the degree itself is less valid and an administrative degree would in fact probably be more useful.
To be a good sales manager you need to 1. meet the prospects personal needs. 2. Anticipating and creating new needs for the prospect and 3. Develop an on-going relationship resulting in repeated sales and referrals.
Technical Degree of course
A sales manager with a technical degree will have in-depth knowledge of the product or service compared to a sales manager with an administrative degree. This knowledge ensures client lock-in and loyalty.
Adminstrative degree have a slight edge. Technical knowledge may be achieved over time. In any new office people will observe your strong administrative skills & how you are enabling your sales force to be more productive. Usually sales people moves with in the same industry for which they already acquired experience.
The attitude towards the any giving target make the diffrence between the highly successful or successful.
