Thanks for inivitation.neutrons are found only in the nucleus of atom where they play an important role in keeping the atom stable. since  protons are positively charged there is an incredibly strong replusive force  between all the protons in  nucleus. neutrons and protons  attract one  another through the strong nuclear interaction.

The neutron particle help proton particle to stack together otherwise nucleus will not exist. It helps stabilize the nucleus and the atom

An atom typically consists of Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons, Electrons are negatively charged and participate in bonding to stabilize the atom, Protons are positively charged and balance the charge of the atom. In addition, their positive charge attracts the negatively charged electrons, so  nucleus of an atom is to contribute to the binding energy or nuclear glue that holds the nucleus itself .

Neutrons is a kind of glue keeping protons together thus allowing for existence of nuclei. This explains while the number of neutrons has to increase with the number of protons (roughly in equal proportion).

But power of this glue is limited anyway so at large number of protons (Z>92) nuclei become unstable with instability depending slightly on the distance from the magic (privileged) number of protons.

They stable the atomic nucleus.
