See, since the project coordinator goal is to become a project manager, he/she should attain certain skills and expertise, to make them potential candidates to be promoted as a PM. right, so as follows
1. Project Coordinator should have a deep knowledge and understanding of the core technical concepts and had on hands practical experience in developed field or technology.
2. Project Coordinator, should have communication skills, and know how to professionally address the stakeholders, sponsors and resources of the project, in a clear and objective manner.
3. Project Coordinator, should be able to get involved in meetings, not just write MOM's and send them to the team for approval, but give him oppinion about the status, conflicts.
4.Project Coordinator, should be able to address any projected conflicted and risks, that might affect the project, such as lack of resources, or anything that might affect the project plan, and address solutions.
Project Coordinator, should know the fundamentals of Project Management deliverables, work on PM Tools, such as MS Project Proffessional, and Server, creating a project working space for the team, and monitor documents and deliverables are up-to-date and uploaded in the right folders.
Project Coordinator, should be organized and have a strong and firm personality and character, with confidence.
he must be aproactive thinker,innovator,and must have excellent communication skill.
Outstanding interpersonal communication skills
In my opinion, out of many characteristics a project coordinator must have; two are the most important, Great communication skills and to be well-organized, these two are the basic building blocks for any project coordinator that wants to stand out and be really good at what (s)he does.
He/ She is required to have a diverse set of skills, knowledge and experience applied throughout the project lifecycle with the capability to make things happen with and through other people.

But i have another question... what is the best certification a person can earn as a project coordinator/manager? is PMP good?
You have to stick your eyes on Schedules and focus on completing things on time and focus more on things not happening.
