I agree with Yasser konsowa.
Basically, first of all we have to collect the client's idea.
Mean which colour or which specific shape if any he/she want.
We have to read the company profile as well.
It will give you an idea may be.

Company Name ..
specialties company ..
Is it within one of the group companies? Is there a specific color for the company in this year?

1) Industry: Most of the times the Industry/Category does it belong to i.e fashion, tech, sports, this solves the color & shape problem half way through and also the defines the character of the brand i.e bold, pro, calm, playful etc.2) Name: The name of the brand can then merge with the industrial character of the logo.3) Colors: If he has some specific colors already attached to the brand ask him.4) Audience: Is there any other specific audience to the logo/brand or it has a general appeal.
for example if it has a general appeal you can't design a complex thing that only few people or a class of people can understand.5) Freedom: Is he willing for a complete overhaul/redesign of the logo or just wants an enhancement touch to the existing logo if he has.
In both case its good to have his likes and dislikes, analysis and feedback.
the more the better.
