"Tensioactifs" is just the french translation for Surface Active Agents or simply "Surfactants" which are compunds that lower the surface tension (or interfacial tension) between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid.
- Industrially, they are mainly used as detergents, to dissolve the hydrophobic moeities in aqueous mediums. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is the most famous example used for such purpose.
- They are also used as wetting agents and dispersants in the preparation of suspensions. Polysorbate & poloxamer are very common surfactants used for this function in the preparation of pharmaceutical suspensions.
- Surfactants are essenisal for the preparation of emulsions (Mixing water and oils). An example for that would be dissolving fat-soluble vitamins (like Vit. E & D) in water.
- Surfactants are also used as anti-foaming agents which is of great value in industrial scale of production of edible and pharmaceutical liquids.
