Leadership style is a manner in which a leader interacts with his followers.

Well known leadership styles are -

Democratic - Gives more freedom to team members and encourage them to participate in decision making

Autocratic - He needs things to be done in his way

Transformational - He provides vision and path to excel. Encourages his team to do things differently to change the way team works.

More popular theory we all come across is "Situational leadership" - Here Leader follows different styles depending on the development level of his team members.

1. Directing - For team members who are beginners and need continuous guidance

2. Coaching - For team members who gained certain knowledge of what to do. Keeps a close look on their performance and keeps coaching them to do enhance their skill

3. Supportive - For team members who can manage their work on their own. Supports as needed and coached where required.

4. Delegating - For team members who are experts. Delegates work and keep check on performance at fixed frequencies.

There are3 main types of leaders :

1: Autocratic leaders : make decisions without consulting their team members, even if their input    would be useful.

2: Democratic leaders : make the final decisions, but they include team members in the decision-  making process. They encourage creativity, and people are often highly engaged in projects and  decisions.

3: Laissez Faire Leaders : leaders give their team members a lot of freedom in how they do their      work, and how they set their deadlines.

The best one in my opinion is the Democratic leader.

Leadership style is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. As seen by the employees, it includes the total pattern of explicit and implicit action of their leaders.

The six common styles are well articulated in Mr.Ahmed Shareef's answer to this question.

The remaining point to say here is that there is a time and place for all leadership styles. No style is good or bad. It's how leaders use them that determines success or failure.

Being a Leader who will be recognized and defined by results not attributes. Does not find fault, find remedy. The one knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.
