Do you believe in delegation ?

Few delegate authority in important matters. All the manager wants to delegate is dog work. Repetitive boring work.

When you delegate somebody, you authorize him to represent you and act on your behalf. Yet, you retain the reponsibility. For me, overdelegating and underdelegating are both not the right choices. When you overdelegate, you give away too much authority to others and too many assignments to do on your behalf. In this case, you may have less work and and maybe less authority to the point where you become dispensable as the employer or your boss may see through the situation and think that there is no need for you as your delegates perform the work. On the other hand, when you underdelegate, you become overburdened and overwhelmed with tasks and assignments to the point where the employer or your boss finds it difficult to promote you as your subordinates can not replace you.  To climb the corporate ladder, you should lift your  foot off the rung where it rests before you  place it on the next upper rung.  Besides, when you underdelegate, you deprive others from the opportunity of learning and growing. Yet, delegating should be made to the right people, as you will be held accountable for their work at the end of the day.

I believe in effective delegation and it is not always boring or dog work which is delegated. Sometimes delegation is to develop your staff and it may also to effectively handle unexpected challenges while maintain goal achievement in time and within budget.

The other point here is that authorities required to do the job must be delegated with it. What is never delegated is the accountability for getting the job done.

Delegation is one of the core concepts of management leadership.Delegation involves working with subordinates to establish direction, authority, and responsibility. In reality, the leader, or the person delegating this authority, retains responsibility even though task completion may have been assigned to others.

Delegation is important for 1) efficiency and 2) development.
