Marketing communications can be used to achieve a number of marketing goals. However, four key or overriding goals have been identified. These are to differentiate a product or service, reinforce a brand’s message and positioning, to inform or make people aware of a brand and to persuade audiences to behave in particular ways.

Task communications are any communication that directly affects the outcome of the small group's efforts. Schedule and budget take up a large portion of task communication, as does resource allocation. Tools such as charts and graphs record the results of task communications.

Some tasks of communication that are industry agnostic:

a) Editing: Making sure every word that goes from the brand/company is correct and non-ambiguous. (For ex: What 'are' and not 'is' the different tasks of communication)

b) Public Relations: Ensuring there's enough buzz about the brand or one of its initiatives in the media which is consumed by existing or potential customers.

c) ORM: Online Reputation Management is to maintain a positive image of the brand on various online forums and communities by engaging customers, addressing grievances, and participating in relevant conversations. ORM is quite mainstream now as many brands wish to maintain a favourable online presence.

d) Content Creations: Creating all sort of content for the company and brand. This includes offline (brochures, newsletters, pamphlets, white papers, storyboards, scripts, print-ads) and online (mailers, banners, website, FAQs, videos, images, viral content, social content).

e) Measurinig and Monitoring: This is the difference between good communication and bad communication. A professional should always measure the reach, impact, engagement and conversions of all his efforts. The result of such insights lead to better optimisation of budget, media, message and time, ultimately improving the future conversions. Various companies/industries use different metrics to monitor their communications and campaigns.
