Please be careful about the difference between chrome and chrome OS
Chrome OS is a system operating system which uses linux as its core kernel. It is built around the Chromium OS browswer platform which is an open source project. It is free to download and install and is used to support web apps.
You can download the Live CD here and rest it out through a virtual machine or separate boot parition if you just want to see what it's like. The Live CD loads operating systems files into system RAM so you don't even need to partition your disk if you're not planning on installing it.
