Lateral thinking can be defined as solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. In other words, it uses our imagination to look at a problem in a fresh way and come up with a new solution. That’s to say, without lateral thinking, companies, organisations, institutions, etc can’t innovate and create new products – they’re just stuck with doing the same old thing, perhaps more efficiently than before, but they won’t be able to lead the way. Any company that wants to stay ahead of the competition needs to recruit graduates who are capable of lateral thinking.
