Credit Risk management is major area in retail banking.Customer 's financial decipline could be established by examining the account .How much deposits come in and the withdrawl pattern.Whether the customer draws more than what he deposit without prior arrangements, How often he does this.How many times his drawings have been bumped due to lack of funds.Has the customer been given warning. etc.

Assessing credit risk is a complex issue and not one that can be answered simply. If you want that then look at garp,org for a more thorough explanation. Credit risk is fundamental to most banking institutions, it's one of the foundations by which they can make or lose money e.g. when looking at credit product development you have to consider. term of the loans, expected loss, probability of default, loss given default etc. It takes some quite complex models and clever people :)
