Facebook has already started paid services for marketing activities.
You can reach the people by paying Facebook to promote your post or your post will be visible to limited followers.
The company is already trying different strategies to facilitate marketers thus they are making them premium by charging for it.
On other hand Facebook is now public limited that's why it's has to charge for it's services somehow to make their shareholders happy.
Also at this stage Facebook can't risk charging it's general users because there are many competitors like Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, Youtube which are improvising with time and becoming threat for Facebook.

It depends on the network, but I might be more comfortable paying actually as I'd have to worry less about what they sell to advertisers.

Facebook is already offering premium services specially for Internet Marketer, whether you have some business or some website or else products to market, you can use the Premium Ad Services that works as same like the concept of Google Adword (PPC) Pay Per Click Advertisement Campaign.
Anyhow, I believe that Facebook will never ever try to convert Social Network completely as a paid service or else if it happens, than I must say that "PEOPLE WILL HAVE ALWAYS MANY OTHER CHOICES/ OPTIONS" Have a Nice Day.

It's a publicly traded company.
Wouldn't make sense for them to do that.
You'd piss off a lot of people.

No, I would not. It will definitely harm Facebook and give other social media channels a chance to rise.
