Being a Project Manager what are the advantages/disadvantages to involve in every activity?

I believe that projet managers should not get involved in every activity as long as it goes as per the approved plan. They might need to get involved if the activity deviated from the plan. They do this with the team member(s) accountable for the activity to identify alternative solutions and seek management approval for the selected alternative.
