Job description

The role of Engineer - Environmental is responsible for implementing technical solutions and programs that drive Bapco Energies’ environmental sustainability on the ground. This role combines engineering expertise with environmental management know-how to reduce the company’s environmental impact and ensure regulatory compliance in daily operations. The incumbent supports in translating high-level sustainability goals into measurable actions and tangible results through rigorous data analysis, fieldwork, and cross-department collaboration. This role is responsible to ensure that Bapco Energies meets its legal environmental obligations and continually improves its performance in line with industry’s best practices and the company’s Sustainability targets.



Bapco Energies operates a portfolio spanning the entire energy value chain in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The portfolio includes wholly-owned subsidiaries and specialized operating companies. Together, these companies drive Bapco Energies' mission to power the next generation.
Responsibilities:

Environmental Monitoring & Compliance Implementation 


  • Conduct routine environmental monitoring and site inspections covering air, water, soil, and other key indicators. 
  • Lead sampling campaigns, waste audits, and related field activities across Bapco Energies facilities. 
  • Analyze monitoring data to identify trends, non‑compliance, or exceedances, and escalate issues for timely corrective action. 
  • Support environmental permitting by gathering and organizing required technical data for emissions, effluent, and waste-related applications. 
  • Ensure day‑to‑day operational compliance with permit conditions and environmental regulations. 
  • Participate in internal and external audits, provide evidence of compliance, and support the implementation of corrective actions. 

Environmental Impact Assessment & Mitigation 


  • Support and facilitate Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and the development of project-specific Environmental Management Plans. 
  • Conduct baseline environmental studies and risk assessments to evaluate potential impacts of new projects or operational modifications. 
  • Identify and recommend mitigation measures to minimize impacts on biodiversity, land, air, and water. 
  • Lead technical activities related to soil and groundwater protection, including containment design, monitoring, and remediation guidance. Coordinate biodiversity assessments and contribute to the development and deployment of the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). 


Pollution Prevention & Resource Efficiency Projects 


  • Lead or contribute to pollution prevention, resource efficiency, and circularity initiatives across operations. 
  • Support waste management improvements by identifying ways to reduce waste, enhance segregation and recycling, and ensure safe disposal. 
  • Collaborate with emissions management teams on energy efficiency enhancements and emissions reduction technologies (e.g., methane capture, flaring reduction). 
  • Support water conservation projects by identifying opportunities for water reuse, recycling, and reducing losses through leak detection and system improvements. 


  • Pilot new technologies, monitoring tools, or process improvements and assess their environmental performance benefits. 


    Technical Documentation & Reporting: 


  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation on environmental compliance and performance, including updated GHG inventories. 


  • Document methodologies used in emissions and environmental calculations to ensure transparency and audit readiness. 


  • Develop technical reports, presentations, and data summaries for internal and external stakeholders. 


  • Contribute to regulatory submissions such as emissions monitoring reports, waste summaries, and environmental performance updates. 


  • Provide technical support to the Environmental Manager in responding to regulatory inquiries, investor questions, or inspections. 


    Cross-Functional Collaboration & Advisory: 


  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Projects teams to integrate environmental requirements into day‑to‑day activities and new developments. 


  • Provide engineering advice on process modifications, spill prevention practices, waste handling, and pollution control measures. 


  • Ensure environmental safeguards such as effluent treatment, emission controls, and secondary containment systems are reflected in engineering designs. 


  • Coordinate with Health & Safety on matters related to chemical handling, spill response, and incident preparedness. 


  • Engage external consultants and laboratories for specialized assessments (e.g., dispersion modelling, noise surveys) and ensure quality of outputs. 


  • Support stakeholder engagement by providing environmental data and technical clarifications for communication materials or community discussions. 


    Continuous Improvement & Innovation 


  • Identify opportunities to improve monitoring systems, environmental calculations, and operational practices. 


  • Stay current with industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in environmental engineering and sustainability. 


  • Lead or participate in pilot projects exploring innovative environmental solutions (e.g., bioremediation, drone-based monitoring). 


  • Promote environmental awareness through toolbox talks, knowledge-sharing sessions, and contributions to internal training. 


  • Capture lessons learned from audits, incidents, or near misses, and integrate them into revised procedures and improved environmental performance. 



Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or Chemical Engineering, . 


  • Minimum 7 years of work experience in an environmental engineering or similar role in industry. Experience in the oil & gas, petrochemical, or energy sector is highly preferred. 


  • Strong foundational knowledge of engineering principles applied to environmental protection is essential. 


  • Additional professional development or certifications in environmental management (for example, certification in pollution control technology, or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor training) are desirable and demonstrate commitment to the field. 


  • Proficiency with environmental modelling software or data analysis tools (for air quality, water quality, etc.) is a plus. 


  • Direct experience with environmental monitoring and involvement in successful environmental improvement projects will be an advantage. 


  • Solid understanding of environmental regulations and standards relevant to industrial operations 


  • Hands-on skills in analyzing and interpreting environmental data – competency in using tools like spreadsheets, databases, or specialized software to analyze trends and calculate emissions or resource usage. Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment and methods. 


  • Knowledge of engineering controls and treatment technologies for pollution. Project management abilities to handle multiple tasks, plan field work, and coordinate with contractors. Strong problem-solving aptitude to design practical solutions for environmental issues encountered on the job. 


  • Keen attention to detail and analytical thinking to ensure data accuracy and identifying subtle environmental trends. 


  • Ability to write clear technical reports and explain findings or procedures to non-specialists in a comprehensible way. 


  • Good teamwork and interpersonal skills to work effectively in cross-disciplinary teams 


  • Commitment to ethical standards and safety always operates with regard for the health and safety of self and others and maintains integrity in environmental data and reporting.
