How can I find a low-pressure job?

Question

I reside in the UAE, and I'm currently looking for a new job. I would like a low-profile job that pays well (by low profile I mean a job that is not too pressuring and doesn’t require working outside working hours). What type of jobs fit these criteria? And in which industries I should be looking?

Answer

Thank you for your message. First of all, let us start by telling you that setting your priorities is the first step that puts you on the right track for a successful job search. It is good that you already know what you’re looking for: a flexible job that would most importantly offer you a good work-life balance.

However, you have to know that no industry offers “low profile jobs” per se. Below are some of the main steps to follow that will help you in identifying what you’re looking for:

Choose your target industry

Know what you like and dislike; what you want in your future job and what you want to avoid. Set your priorities (in your case for example, work-life balance and flexibility take over career growth); determine your values and what job satisfies you most; make a list of your skills and strengths so that you know which area you could use them best. All of this will help you determine your target industry.

Choose your target company

Once you have chosen your target industry it is time to narrow down your choices by selecting the companies you think are right for you. But first, make sure you know the type of company to target: a large corporation or a smaller company. You have to know that to each its pros and cons. While a larger, more established corporation offers higher salaries and more room for promotion, working late can be frequent as competition for roles is high.

On the other hand, smaller companies can be more comfortable, but salaries might not be as generous. You can visit Bayt.com’s Salary Search to look for companies and read reviews submitted by employees. This will certainly be of great help to you.

Apply to jobs of interest to you

Once you know the industry and the companies to target, you can start an effective job search looking for vacancies that match your profile. Leading job sites like Bayt.com allow you to search for jobs by job role, by company, by sector, and by location. The advanced job search also lets you to run a more specific search by specifying your career level, the employment status you are looking for (full time/part time), and the employment type (employee, contractor etc.)

After spotting the jobs that you like, apply directly using your updated CV, making sure it is tailored to reflect how the position requirements and your skills match.

Address all concerns during the interview

Congratulations, you have reached the interview stage! Only now you can address all your concerns. The interview is the perfect time to assess the basics such as the type of contract, the probation period, the working hours, the working days, the reporting hierarchy, the job responsibilities, etc. Make sure you have all your doubts cleared before thanking your interviewer and leaving the room.

Good luck!
