Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL) was established in October 1980 as joint venture between ADNOC and TotalFINAELF. Construction activities began in 1980 and production started in 1983. The prime objective behind establishing the company was to utilize lean gas supplied from onshore field of Bab, Asab and Thamama C to produce fertilizers and market them locally and internationally.Plant facilities, located in Ruwais Industrial Area, comprise Ammonia plant is 1050 MT per day and 1500 MT per day for Urea. The plants have fully integrated utility units with storage facilities. The company has been continuously improving its technology and productivity. Today, Ammonia production has reached 1310 MT per day and Urea 1850 per day. This has increased FERTIL's ability to compete worldwide. Currently, FERTIL exports around 600,000 tons of Urea annually, including surplus Ammonia. The plants have consistently operated above design capacities, and an expansion of the complex is under consideration. In 1999, FERTIL completed the milestone of six years without a lost-time incident which has been considered an outstanding safety achievement.
