Baheya is the first free of charge center in Egypt specialized in early detection and treatment of women diagnosed with breast cancer, which is the most common cancer amongst women. According to the WHO, one out of eight women will develop breast cancer, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year. It is increasing particularly in developing countries where the majority of cases are diagnosed in late stages. Their records show that 1.6 million new case of breast cancer is discovered each year, however these percentages vary from one country to another. In Egypt, the National Cancer Institute announced that 110 thousand new cancer cases are discovered annually, half of them in women, which is equivalent to 55 thousand cases, of which breast cancer represents one-third of the cases – which amounts to about 18 thousand new cases of cancer discovered each year. In order to improve the outcome and survival rate, early detection remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control, as it opens the door to several treatment options and therefore a greater chance of survival of up to 98% in the first stage, 93% in the second stage and 73% in the third stage.
